Liposuction is a body sculpting technique used to remove unwanted fat deposits from areas of the body that are resistant to moderate exercise and appropriate diet. The process helps to removes fat cells from the areas treated. The areas most commonly treated are the face (including the cheeks, neck and underneath the chin), the axillary region, breasts, abdomen, waist and hips, trochanteric areas (saddle bags), thighs, knees and ankles. For men, liposuction is commonly performed on the neck, flanks or “love handles”, abdomen, and chest. In can also be used to further define the abdominal musculature using superficial liposculpture – the rectus abdominal muscles are etched out along the inscription of the muscles and the lateral border.

Liposuction Procedure

A tumescent liposuction technique is utilized, which allows the safe removal of fat with minimal blood loss. The procedure is done through tiny, well-camouflaged incisions. Tumescent fluid (an intravenous fluid with lidocaine and epinephrine added) is infused into the fatty tissues. The fluid distends the tissue, allowing better removal fat, while also providing a localized anesthetic effect as well as constricting localized blood vessels, diminishing blood loss. A variety of special cannula instruments are used to suction away the fatty tissue. A single suture closes the access incisions.

Procedures commonly performed along with liposuction: tummy tuck, breast augmentation, breast lift, and breast reduction procedures.

Recovery Time from Liposuction

The surgery is usually done in our accredited outpatient surgical center. You are encouraged to walk after surgery and gradually increase your physical activity. Patients are seen by Dr. Verbin one to three days after surgery for their first appointment. A compression garment is worn for 3 to 4 weeks. Swelling and some bruising are expected. Most patients are able to return to work 3 to 7 days later. Light exercise can resume in 7 to 14 days.

It should be emphasized from the outset that the procedure has some limitations in sculpting. However, in patients where there is an abnormal deposition of fat, it is extremely helpful in removing some of this fat in order to enhance one’s appearance. The liposuction procedure is most effective in patients with good skin elasticity, as the skin will retract after the fat has been removed. In patients who have relaxed skin, it may be used in combination with skin excision in areas to achieve the optimal result.
