Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation is most commonly and easily performed by inserting an implant under the tissue and onto the lower border of the mandibular symphysis (bony chin). Other techniques exist and are very effective at adding projection or length to the chin. These usually involve cutting, advancing and plating bone and are typically associated with longer down times.*

Chin implants come in varying sizes and shapes to best “fit” one’s chin. During surgery sizers are placed and the best is choosen for optimal size. The implants are made of a solid silicone and are best inserted through a small incision hidden in the crease under the chin. An alternative approach is through the inside of the lower lip, but this carries with it a slightly higher chance of infection. Chin augmentation is a useful adjunct to balance the face and nose when considering rhinoplasty (nasal surgery). It also helps the jaw line, adding to tightening of the neck skin and jowl region.*
