No one is immune from facial aging; however, everyone has an option to roll back the years if symptoms become a concern. Problems can begin gradually. You may start to notice a few fine wrinkles and skin that is beginning to sag. You may even be able to control these symptoms early on with skin treatments. However, non-invasive procedures can offer only so much rejuvenation. Eventually, symptoms will become too severe for minimally invasive options to improve. And it will be time to consider a facelift.
A facelift can literally restore years to your look. The results of a facelift can also last for a decade or more. These factors make a facelift the “gold standard” in facial rejuvenation. The procedure can also deliver tremendous value because of its comprehensiveness and longevity. After a facelift, you most likely will not need to have any other type of facial rejuvenation treatment. Great results, however, depend on selecting a competent as well as a compassionate surgeon.
An excellent plastic surgeon will have a full and complete understanding of the procedure. In addition, he will know precisely how to tailor the surgery to your individual needs, giving you beautiful, natural-looking results. Patients who carefully choose their surgery will enjoy a far superior outcome in comparison to other facelift patients — especially when they also educate themselves about the procedure. You can learn more about your surgery and how to choose a surgeon here to get the wonderful results you deserve.
A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, is designed to restore a refreshed, rejuvenated and more youthful look to your face and neck. Many patients still delay their surgery out of fear. They worry about having the stereotype “pulled” or “tight” look. Those days are gone. State-of-the-art facelift techniques can successfully restore smooth skin, youthful volumes and natural curves — without patients ever looking overdone. Today you can easily look years younger, with all the attention on you and not your surgery.
Here’s why you and many patients like you will want to consider a facelift. Gravity forces the face to lose both bony and soft tissue volume. These changes then create hallowing, sagging and wrinkles. A facelift reverses these phenomena. Your surgeon will use a combination of carefully chosen techniques to achieve your results. They will frequently include:
- Vertical resuspension
- Soft tissue augmentation and filling
- Structural work on underlying deeper facial tissue and
- Skin resurfacing techniques

A facelift provides individuals many lasting benefits. Because it augments the deeper skin tissues of the face, it can provide more and more lasting rejuvenation than any other facial treatment. Men and women often choose to have a facelift because:
- It can produce smoother, younger-looking skin throughout the midface
- It can smooth nasolabial folds
- It can reduce facial hollows
- It can create better facial contours and reduce the jowls
- It can eliminate excess submental fat
- It can provide more comprehensive results than any other facial treatment
- The treatment is highly customizable so that you can get precise and beautiful results
- Your facial rejuvenation can easily last for 10 years or more
With so many benefits and advantages, you should discuss having a facelift with your surgeon even if you have mild facial aging symptoms. You may also benefit from a mini facelift, which focuses on improvements on the lower third of the face.
All surgeries have risks, including a facelift procedure. However, the risks associated with a facelift are extremely small. You can lower your risks even further by only selecting a board-certified plastic surgeon to perform your procedure.
Risks associated with a facelift include:
- Adverse reactions to anesthesia
- Risk of hematosis (blood clots)
- Risk of hemorrhage (excess bleeding)
- Nerve damage resulting in changes to skin sensitivity
While these complications are possible, and you should be fully informed about them before having surgery, they are extremely rare. And concerns about these issues like these should not prevent you from enjoying the overwhelming advantages that a facelift offers.
A facelift will improve the lower temple region and the entire cheek, jowl and neckline. To achieve your results, your surgeon will make a single, long incision around the perimeter of the face. The incision will start within the hairline of the temple in front of and above the ear, then extend down in front of the ear, very close to the edge of the ear canal.
The incision will then pass around the lobe of the ear, up behind the ear, approximately 2/3 its length, and then turn back into the hair-bearing scalp or along the edge of the hairline. A small incision is also usually made under the chin to allow contouring of the fat and tightening of the neck muscles. This technique will improve the neck contour and area under the chin.
It is important to understand that your facelift will not affect your forehead, upper or lower eyelids, nose or area around your lips. If you want these facial areas rejuvenated, you can have complementary treatments along with your facelift for more complete facial rejuvenation.
Your facelift, however, will provide visible and substantial results. It will give you a more youthful and rested look, fully rejuvenating treated areas without creating an overdone appearance. You can have any additional procedures you choose during your facelift surgery or whenever you are ready to have them.
During the first several days, swelling will be at its peak and your activity will be most limited. You will quickly be able to return to your normal routine, however. You will also have frequent postoperative visits in the first two weeks after surgery to ensure there are no complications. If any occur, Dr. Verbin will address them swiftly.
For most patients, dressings will be completely removed by the third day, and various sutures removed between five and 14 days. Makeup generally can be worn one week after surgery. Although recovery varies between patients, after three weeks, the average patient will look healthy and feel comfortable returning to social activities.
You may still experience some small firm areas within the cheek or neck where you have had surgery. And it may take several months for these to resolve and for the skin to soften to normal consistency. These are not a cause for alarm; they are a natural but temporary result of surgery. Dr. Verbin will support you throughout your recovery, remaining available to you by phone and in-person, as needed.
After the surgery, we place the surgical area in a large padded bandage, which encompasses the ears, chin and head. You will stay with us in the recovery room until you are fully awake and then you will be either transferred to an aftercare facility or picked up by your family or a friend who will stay with you that night. You will have your aftercare instructions and prescriptions for pain medication and antibiotics with you upon discharge.
